Q. What were the causes of growth of Communalism in Indian politics during 1937-39 ?

Ans.

A significant development during this period was the rapid growth of spirit of communalism in Indian politics. The elections to the legislative assemblies held on separate and communal basis encouraged separatist tendencies. Besides, the Congress could not win most of the seats reserved for the minorities. It could win only 26 seats out of 482 seats reserved for the Muslims. The Muslim League led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah took full advantage of the situation. It raised the cry that the Congress was a Hindu organisation.
