Q. What led to the Khilafat Movement ?

Ans.

The British decided to abolish the office of the Khalifa, the Chief religious leader of the Muslims. Muslims'in India were annoyed at this. They drifted away from the British and extended their co-operation to the India National Congress. The Muslims started a movement against the British. It was supported by the Congress. It was called the Khilafat movement which was led by Ali Brothers. In 1920 the All India Khilafat Committee decided to support Gandhiji in his Non-Cooperation programme against the British. This movement brought the Hindus and the Muslims closer to each other.
