The women in large numbers played a commendabie role in the freedom struggle. It was itself a big step towards the emancipation of the women. They actively participated in the agitation against the partition of Bengal. They also took part in the Home Rule Movement of 1915-16 A.D. After 1918 A.D. the women actively took part in the movement for boycott of foreign goods and promotion of Swadeshi side by side with men. They also took much interest in the propagation of khadi. The women also actively participated in the Non-co-operation movement started by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920. They boldly faced police lathi charge and tear gas shells and the showers of bullets. Some women also went to jails for the cause of India's freedom struggle. Most prominent women leader Sarojini Naid took active part in Indian politics. She presided over the Kanpur session of Indian National Congress in 1925. Mrs. Vijay Lakshmi Pandit also took active part in . the freedom struggle for India along with her brother Pt. Jawahar Lai Nehru. Mrs Annie Besant started Home Rule League and demanded that the British should grant self-govt. to Indians. She was also elected the ' president of Congress.
