The suspension of the Non-co-operation movement by Gandhiji in 1922 was bitterly resented by some Congress leaders. Under the leadership of C.R. Das and Pandit Moti Lai Nehru, they organised a new \ party called the Swarajist Party.This Party had little faith in civil disobedience. It aimed to capture seats in the Legislatures in order to prove their strength with the common people. They aimed to enter the legislatures by contesting elections and to intensify the struggle for Swaraj. In the elections of 1923, the Swarajists won a dominant position in the Central Legislative Assembly. It had a powerful influence in the Provincial Legislative Councils. The party was successful in getting the Rowlatt Act repealed. Under the influence of this party, the Government decided to increase the number of Indian Commissioned officers in the army. Due to the efforts * of the party, some laws were also passed for the welfare of the industrial labour.
