In the early stage of its formation, the Congress leaders believed in peaceful methods to get their demands accepted by the British Government but there was another stream of youn men who thought that armed revolution was the only method to get rid of the British Government. These young men organised several societies on military lines. Sri Aurobindo Ghosh started an organisation called Bhawani Mandir at Baroda. V.D. Savarkar established the Mitramela in 1900. It was renamed AbhinavBharat in 1907. An attempt was made in 1907 on the life of Lt. Governor of Bengal. Similarly the unpopular judge of Muzzafarpur, Mr.Monsford was on the hit list of these Revolutionaries. Two youngmen Profulla Chaki and Khuddi Ram Bose threw a bomb on the carriage of the judge. An innocent woman was killed. Khuddi Ram Bose was arrested and hanged while Profulla Chaki committed suicide. Another revolutionary Ajit Singh and his nephew Bhagat Singh were famous names. Bhagat Singh later laid down his life at the gallows. In the south, the movement was spread by the Chapekar Brothers. Trie revolutionaries also preached violence abroad, of them V.D. Sarvarkar, Hardyal, Shamji Verma and Madam Bhikaji Cama were renowned. Another offshot of the revolutionary movement was the Ghaddar movement which proved remarkable in the history of India's freedom struggle.
