The British suffered heavy losses in the First Afgan War (1840—41) and in some battles in the Anglo—Sikh wars. They were once again humiliated when they experienced much difficulties in crushing J - the Santhal rebellion in 1855. Though the British ultimately won these wars and suppressed the Santhal rebellion, their prestige had suffered a severe blow. The Indians were convinced that they were no loss powerful than the British.
