Q. What was General Enlistment Act 1856?

Ans.

The Viceroy, Lord Canning, passed this Act by which every new recruit undertook to serve oversea(lands beyond seas), if ordered. The law hurt the sentiments of the Sepoys because according to the currenreligious beliefs of the Hindus, travel across the seas was considered a sin.
