South India also witnessed the growth of socio-religious reforms in the 19th century. The most important leader who brought social awakening in the Andhra Pradesh was Veeresalingam. He was influenced by the teachings of Keshab Chandra Sen. He started a journal in Tamil in 1876, its only aim was to propagate social reforms. He worked for the promotion of female education. He made efforts for the removal of the restrictions regarding widow remarriage.
