Q.Discuss the main provisions of the Government of India Act 1935?

Ans.

The discussions at the Third Round Table Conference ultimately led to the passing of Government of India Act 1935.

1 The Act provided for the establishment of an All India Federation of British Indian provinces and the Indian states.

2.The Central legislature or federal legislature was to consist of two houses namely, the Council of State
and the Federal Assembly in which the native states were also to be given representation. The members of the native states were not to be elected by people but were to be nominated by the native rulers.

3.The right to vote was very limited. Only 14 per cent of the total population of British India was given
the right to vote.

4.The Act also provided for the establishment of a Federal Court, a Federal Service Commission and the
Reserve Bank of India.

5.In the provinces, the existing system of Dyarchy was abolished. The entire field of provincial
administration was placed under the popular ministers. This new system was called Provincial Autonomy.

6.The Act gave the Governor-General at the centre and the Governors in the provinces vast and wide
powers.

7.As in the case of Reform Act. of 1909 and 1919, the Act of 1935 provided the system of separate and
communal electorate.
