In the first place, the Company's land revenue system made the land a saleable commodity. The peasants could now sell or mortgage their lands. Secondly, Besides the food crops, the cultivators now began to produce cash crops like cotton, jute, pulses, sugarcane etc. The Company made no efforts to improve the condition of agriculture, its only aim was to collect maximum revenue. Fourthly, the cultivators had to borrow money at high rates of interests to pay taxes to the Government. They were compelled to perform forced labour 'begar' for the money lenders.
