Q. What was the commercial policy of the East India Company towards India before 1760 ?


.Ans. In the beginning, the Company was mainly a trading body. It brought gold and silver into India and exchanged them with Indian goods like cotton textiles, spices and salt petre.The Company made huge profits by selling. Indian manufactured goods in Europe. Indian goods were very popular in England but the British manufactures were jealous of the popularity of Indian textiles. They compelled their government to put exporter of cotton and other raw material. The Company did not encourage the establishment of modern industries in India. The burden on land increased and the condition of the peasants became miserable
