During the rule of the Delhi Sultans and the Mughals, the Indian villages were self-sufficient. The village people satisfied all their needs in the village itself. They did not depend upon any outside or government help. They came-into contact with the government only when they paid their revenue at the harvest time. Every village had its carpenter, blacksmith, weaver, potter, baker, cobbler and the artisan who fulfilled the needs of the village community.
